BLOCKED DRAINS
Signs You May Have a Blocked Sewer Line
Slow drains, gurgling sounds, sewer smells and water backing up can all be signs that the problem is further down the sewer line, not just in one fixture.

IN SHORT
One slow sink does not automatically mean the sewer line is blocked. But when several drains slow down, toilets gurgle, sewer smells appear or water backs up in another fixture, the problem may be deeper in the drainage system. The pattern of symptoms matters. If the same blockage keeps returning, it is worth finding out why rather than simply clearing it again.
One slow drain or a blocked sewer line?
A blocked sewer line usually affects more than one part of the house. If only one basin or shower is draining slowly, the problem may be local to that fixture. If the toilet, shower and other drains start behaving strangely at the same time, the restriction may be further along the shared drainage line.
You do not need to diagnose it yourself. What matters is noticing whether the problem is isolated or whether several fixtures are showing symptoms together.
Why the pattern matters
Your household fixtures eventually connect into larger drainage lines before wastewater leaves the property. When a restriction develops further down the system, using one fixture can affect another. That is why a blocked sewer line can show up as gurgling, slow drainage, unusual smells or water rising somewhere else.
The more symptoms you see together, especially across different rooms, the more worthwhile it becomes to have the line checked properly.
SIGNS TO WATCH FOR
Common signs the blockage may be in the sewer line
01
Several slow drains
More than one sink, shower or floor drain starts emptying more slowly than usual.
02
Gurgling or bubbling
Toilets or drains make unusual sounds when water is used elsewhere in the house.
03
Sewer smells
Persistent unpleasant smells appear around drains, bathrooms or outdoor drainage points.
04
Water backs up elsewhere
Flushing or running one fixture causes water to rise or return through another drain.
Other warning signs outside the house
A sewer problem is not always obvious indoors. Wastewater or unusually wet ground around an outdoor overflow point, inspection opening or drainage area can also indicate that the line is not flowing as it should.
If sewage is overflowing, avoid contact with the wastewater and arrange for the drainage problem to be assessed. An active overflow is more urgent than an isolated slow sink.

A CCTV drain inspection can help show what is happening inside the line when a blockage keeps returning or the cause is not clear.
DAN’S PRACTICAL ADVICE
“One slow drain can be a simple local blockage. What gets my attention is when several fixtures are affected, water starts coming back somewhere else, or the same problem keeps returning. That is when it is worth looking at the bigger picture.”

Why recurring blockages deserve a closer look
Clearing a blockage restores the flow, but it does not always explain why the line blocked in the first place. A recurring sewer blockage can be caused by tree roots, damaged or shifted pipework, heavy build up, foreign objects or another restriction inside the drain.
If the blockage returns, or there are signs that the problem may be deeper in the line, a CCTV drain inspection can help show the condition of the pipe before more work is recommended.
