A clear explanation of what a drain camera inspection involves, what it can find, and when it is worth doing.

A CCTV drain inspection uses a small waterproof camera to show what is happening inside a drain or sewer line. It is most useful for recurring blockages, suspected tree roots, older properties, pre-purchase checks, or before deciding on pipe repair or replacement.
A CCTV drain inspection — also called a sewer camera inspection or drain camera inspection — involves a small waterproof camera attached to a flexible cable being fed through a drain or sewer line. As the camera moves through the pipe, it transmits live footage that the plumber can view on a screen in real time.
The camera can travel through bends, junctions and varying pipe sizes, giving the plumber a direct view of conditions inside the line — without any digging, cutting or guessing. The footage shows the interior walls of the pipe, any obstructions present, and the condition of the pipe itself.
It is a diagnostic tool, not a repair. The camera shows what is happening so that an informed decision can be made about what to do next.
A CCTV inspection can reveal a range of conditions inside a drain or sewer line that would otherwise be invisible without excavation.
Tree roots entering through cracks or joints are one of the most common findings in older Adelaide properties. The camera shows where the roots are entering, how dense the root mass has become, and whether the surrounding pipe is cracked or letting roots through at a joint.
Underground pipes deteriorate over time. Clay and earthenware pipes, common in older homes across Port Adelaide, Semaphore and Taperoo, can crack, collapse or shift with ground movement. A camera inspection identifies where damage has occurred and how extensive it is.
Misaligned joints, grease, scale, debris build-up or a section of pipe sitting at the wrong angle can all contribute to repeat blockages. A camera inspection helps identify whether the problem is a straightforward blockage or a structural issue that needs further attention.
If the same drain blocks more than once, especially with shorter intervals between blockages, a camera can help identify the underlying cause.
When several fixtures are slow or gurgling at the same time, the problem may be in the main sewer line rather than one fixture.
Older properties may have clay or earthenware drain lines with a higher chance of cracking, root intrusion and joint failure over time.
A camera inspection can be useful before purchasing an older property or before making a decision about pipe repair or replacement.
After a CCTV inspection, the plumber should be able to explain clearly what was found, where it was found, and what the practical options are. The findings will typically fall into one of three categories:
The right recommendation depends on what the camera actually shows, which is the entire point of doing the inspection before advising on the next step.

“If a drain has blocked more than once, it is usually worth finding out why it is coming back rather than simply clearing it again. A camera inspection helps us understand what is happening before recommending the next step.”
